One of my favorite things of all time is a person who discovers a gap in the market AND takes the road less traveled to FILL THE GAP! It’s really tough to do this so I commend the determination & dedication that it takes to achieve product launch success.

An excellent example of this success is Dr. Monica Wood: a surgeon, Multiple Sclerosis ambassador and entrepreneur who is shaking up the mosquito repellent industry with ‘SectAway: an innovative patent pending insect repellent system. Dr. Wood was inspired to create ‘SectAway when she could not find an easy-to-use, effective insect repellent before a trip to Puerto Rico around the time the first ZIKA case was reported there. This was unacceptable to her so she took matters into her own hands. As a biotech/medical professional, Dr. Wood formulated a botanical, DEET-free mixture and sent it to an independent entomology lab for testing. The tests yielded excellent results that are comparable to national brands of repellent (ummm – AWESOME), which meant that the product is on the right track. To solve the challenge of avoiding sticky sprays and wearing disposable, ugly bracelets, ‘SectAway is worn on handcrafted, special wooden reusable bracelets that hold the mixture: uniting fashion and function! A huge bonus is the decorative storage dish that also acts as a diffuser so you can put next to your bed at night for additional protection. Very thoughtful, eco-friendly, smells great, looks great and is effective.

Dr. Wood is not allowing MS to define her as she tenaciously works towards helping people protect themselves from mosquito-borne illnesses in the USA and around the world. All funds from the Kickstarter campaign will go towards further lab testing and product improvements.

Hi Folks – it is hard to believe that a year has passed since I launched RestoPresto® to the market via a Kickstarter campaign!  Because of generous friends, family, strangers (who are now customers); very little sleep and 100% belief and love for my product, the campaign was overfunded and a gaggle of RestoPresto® mats was manufactured in the USA!

I have HUGE news to share! I have officially chosen Kickstarter as my platform to raise funding for the first production run of my product.

This means that you will be able to pre-order your own first edition of my product via Kickstarter before it is manufactured!

Several people have asked me questions about how Kickstarter works, so I have written an overview of what it is (and what it is not) ahead of my campaign launch.  Please see below.

I am beyond excited to share ALL of the details about my product with you in a few days and am thrilled that I will be celebrating the launch with my hometown friends in St. Pete, FL on Saturday. As I have said, many a time…please stay tuned!

Kickstarter is a reward based (versus equity based) crowdfunding platform. Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, typically via the Internet. The model is comprised of 3 main roles: the project initiator who proposes the project to be funded (me); individuals who support the project (hopefully you) and a moderating organization that brings the parties together to launch the idea (Kickstarter).

Through Kickstarter, I will engage friends, family and social media contacts (all of who, in turn, I hope will spread the word) to provide a clear overview of my invention, the amount of money I seek, how the funds will be used and what the rewards will be at each contribution level. Plus there will be a VIDEO!

People interested in supporting my project will be able to donate money easily and safely through my secured Kickstarter web page. In return, I will offer various rewards at each contribution level.

The goal is to reach (and hopefully exceed) my financial target. With Kickstarter, fundraising is “all or nothing” in that if I do not meet my fundraising goal, then I do not get the funds and backers do not get charged.

I chose Kickstarter as the platform to raise money for my product invention as an alternative to gathering investors for two reasons: 1) I wish to maintain 100% ownership (rather than exchange equity) in my company and 2) I wish to take advantage of the far-reaching exposure that Kickstarter can bring to my product.

A common question for prospective backers is about incentive. What is the incentive for someone to contribute to a campaign to fund a project? The answer is twofold: receiving a reward is cool and there is a sense of gratification that comes from helping someone bring an idea to life. Being a supporter of a product launch can be an exciting and fulfilling experience.

For me, the process of creating a product from scratch has been a remarkable journey. Now I am at the pre-production point and financial backers are critical for me to keep the manufacturing process in the US. I truly look forward to bringing my supporters along with me for this wild ride!

Lastly, my Kickstarter campaign will be interactive between prospective supporters, backers and me. I will maintain an open line of communication for people to contact me and for me to keep my backers fully in the loop on the project and fulfillment schedule.

As an inventor and small business owner, I hit a huge milestone last Friday exhibiting RestoPresto at the New York Junior League Golden Tree fundraiser; marking the first time RestoPresto was a vendor. Witnessing people’s excitement about the product that I created from scratch at a festive and philanthropic event is an indescribable feeling.

For those of you who have taken the leap to make, launch and build a company, a product or a service understand how incredible, educational and validating it is to obtain positive feedback from prospective and new clients. I had 11 full hours to talk about and show people RestoPresto and the fact that it was in a supportive and pro-small business environment like Golden Tree, with proceeds supporting charitable community projects in New York, was extra special.

My thank you list is enormous and begins with the New York Junior League for providing me with an opportunity to spread the joy of RestoPresto to so many people and a special thanks goes out to Charlotte for continuous positive encouragement. I appreciate that my US factory was able to squeeze RestoPresto into the production schedule to produce a small pre-Kickstarter order so that I could take advantage of this invaluable experience. From my heart, I thank my sister, Dana for hours and hours of preparation and planning and for being an outstanding RestoPresto ambassador. I literally was able to physically arrive and set up my exhibit table at Golden Tree because of my cousin Nina whose joyful and calming disposition made a stressful morning fun! The talented Kayle of Dot Zev Sweets, whose delicious and beautiful “RP” cookies were a HUGE hit, made my display even sweeter!

Each day since I first came up with the idea for RestoPresto, I have worked on some aspect of the product or business so accomplishing the first public exhibition is superb!

Hi Candi Dishers!

My Kickstarter campaign ended at 9:00 am on Monday the 27th of October and I am thrilled to have exceeded my fundraising goal.  This means that I will manufacture a substantial order of RestoPresto™ mats with a wonderful factory in the USA!

As many people know, the idea for RestoPresto™ hit me in 2013 and I am extremely proud that a year after the first prototype was made, I will be filling orders to put RestoPresto™ into the hands of my new customers. This is exciting, validating and challenging!

Dishing about RestoPresto: turning a great idea into reality!

I came up with the idea for RestoPresto last year when I was in Sheep Meadow in Central Park, New York and am delighted to be on the way to manufacturing in the USA so that this convenient, multi-functional, on-the-go solution will be in the hands of my first customers soon!

It was a “full circle” and validating moment when I was at Sheep Meadow last weekend with RestoPresto! Here is a photo!

The Kickstarter campaign has been going incredibly well and I now understand what my predecessors meant by saying that managing a crowd-funding campaign is a 24-hour job. It is! Since I am a one-person operation, it is challenging to “do it all” but let me tell you, it is getting done AND it is terrific.

I am tenaciously running all aspects of this process so the fact that people will be using and enjoying their own RestoPresto mats in the very near future is beyond exciting and keeps me very motivated. Each day is different, presenting challenges and accomplishments some are expected (most are not) and after the past 24 hours, which were a bit crazy, I decided to take a quick BLOG break to write. I kid you not, at one point yesterday I was simultaneously speaking to one person on my landline, another person on my smartphone, emailing a third person from one laptop and googling on my other laptop! Talk about multi-functioning!

It was a year ago that I hit “PUBLISH” on my first blog post on The Candi Dish and what a year it has been!

Dishing out stories, snapshots and suggestions is the goal of The Candi Dish. While I have not dished out as much as I had hoped due to my focus on my production invention, RestoPresto™, it has been fun and I plan to keep the blog going for as long as possible.

I am thrilled to share news about my product invention, RestoPresto™.

RestoPresto™ is a 3-in-1 portable, compact, water-repellent mat that you can sit on, sit under and wear.  When contained in its pouch, RestoPresto™ (aka “RP”) fits in an adult hand and when open, it is the size of a beach towel. With snaps, drawstrings and loops at each corner, the configurations for RP are endless making it a multi-functional solution for impromptu and planned events.

Picnics, the beach, travel, unexpected weather changes, sport events, child care (including diaper changes), festivals, pet care, playgrounds, commuting, exercising on the go and so much more! RP is for all ages and all seasons!

I came up with the idea for RP in 2013 and have been designing, creating prototypes, testing fabrics and trims and searching for manufacturers in the U.S. that are willing to work with a first time inventor.

I am very pleased to have established a relationship with two prospective factories in the U.S., finalized the design after creating 15 prototypes, registered my trademark and have a provisional utility patent and a design patent pending.  I am now ready to put RP into the hands of consumers!

This is where you come in!
